How to write a talk

31 March 2020

The steps for writing a talk are really simple, but the process of writing a post about them is not.

The basic premise I discovered it works for me is to think about a talk as if it were a story. This means that there is a string that you can follow along and not just skipping from one unrelated point to the next.

Now, you can do this in several different ways, but the way that make people care about what you are speaking is the most effective, as they will not tune out.

How do you make people care? By telling stories, and characters that are relatable. So far I’ve not followed my own advice, and have been just delivering ideas and not stories. I bet you are about to stop reading and go do something else.

What if I tell you that, once upon a time, my students got bored to death? To be continued…
